Presently, the <acronym title="Portuguese Wildlife Society">SPVS</acronym> embraces several projects related with environmental education, contaminants in wildlife, population ecology of carnivores, ungulates, passerines, rodents, birds and marine mammals, conservation medicine and marine animals rehabilitation.   Since 2006, we have established a small rehabilitation centre (<acronym title="Quiaios Rehab Centre">CRAM-Q</acronym>) focused on marine animals in the centre of Portugal (Quiaios-Figueira da Foz). The <acronym title="Quiaios Rehab Centre">CRAM-Q</acronym> was the first rehab center in Portugal to successfully rehabilitate a stranded cetacean. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/naza.jpg" height="167" alt="Nazaré saying Hi!" width="251" style="float: left; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" /> In fact, in August 2006, our rescue team was called out to a stranding of a pilot whale calf and this event lead to the first successful cetacean rehab in Portugal. Since then, our rehab centre has been functioning permanently. In the last 2 years we were called out to rescue 18 cetaceans, 3 seals, 8 marine turtles, 23 marine birds, 24 terrestrial birds and 15 terrestrial mammals. Presently, there are 5 marine birds, 3 loggerhead turtles and one common dolphin in rehabilition. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/martinha.jpg" height="167" alt="Martinha saying Hi!" width="251" style="float: right; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" /> Our last patient (named Martinha) was rescued in September of 2007 after being accidentally caught in gillnets. Martinha was able to overcome all health problems and her rehabilitation is a considerable success for our rehab team. Martinha's rehab process is now on its 7th month and since last month we are building a new pool for the final phase of her rehabilitation program, before releasing her back to the wild. If everything continues according to plan, Martinha will be the first rescued dolphin to be returned to the wild in the Portuguese history. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/vet2.jpg" height="167" alt="Renato tired of this dull pool trying to have fun" width="251" style="float: left; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" /> As many of you know, marine mammal rehab is probably one of the most expensive processes in the rehabilitation world. Pools are expensive, filtering systems are expensive and fragile, there is the need for high amounts of water and high amounts of frozen food in short periods of time, etc, etc. Unfortunately, <acronym title="Portuguese Wildlife Society">SPVS</acronym> (like all other <abbr title="Non Government Organizations">NGO</abbr> rehab centers in Portugal) has no governmental funding and relies solely on volunteers and donations. The rehab centre needs to pay huge medical, food, water and equipment bills every year. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/renato.jpg" height="167" alt="Renato tired of this dull pool trying to have fun" width="251" style="float: right; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" /> Over the last 24 months, it has become clear that our rehab efforts are improving and our capability to rescue threatened and emblematic animals is producing positive results, both in the areas of conservation and environmental education.   A HUGE effort is being made to improve our rehab centre so that it becomes one of the most efficient in Portugal. Recently, we have improved our infirmary as well as our food preparation room. We have also invested in a new pool that will become the largest cetacean rehab tank in Portugal. This tank will be partially offered by the tank company (labor will be free of charge) although <acronym title="Portuguese Wildlife Society">SPVS</acronym> will pay for the pool materials. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/vet.jpg" height="167" alt="Hands on! Actualmente, a <acronym title="Sociedade Portuguesa de Vida Selvagem">SPVS</acronym> dedica-se a diversos projectos relacionados com <a href="http://www.socpvs.org/formacao.php" title="Educação Ambiental na RNSM" target="_blank">Educação Ambiental</a>, contaminação em vida selvagem, ecologia populacional de carnívoros, ungulados, passeriformes, roedores, aves marinhas, mamíferos marinhos, medicina da conservação e reabilitação de animais marinhos. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/naza.jpg" height="167" alt="Nazaré" width="251" style="float: left; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" /> Em 2006, foi criado um pequeno centro de reabilitação animais marinhos (<acronym title="Centro de Reabilitação de Animais Marinhos de Quiaios">CRAM-Q</acronym>) no centro de Portugal (Quiaios, Figueira da Foz). Em Agosto de 2006, a nossa equipa de salvamento foi chamada para um arrojamento de uma cria de baleia piloto, o que levou ao primeiro sucesso deste centro de reabilitação. Desde então, este funciona permanentemente, tendo a equipa de reabilitação, nos últimos 2 anos, sido chamada para o resgate de 18 cetáceos, 3 focas, 8 tartarugas, 23 aves marinhos, 24 aves terrestres e 15 mamíferos terrestres. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/martinha.jpg" height="167" alt="Martinha" width="251" style="float: right; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" />   Actualmente, estão em reabilitação, 5 aves marinhas, 3 tartarugas boba e 1 golfinho comum.  A nossa última paciente em reabilitação (a Martinha) foi resgatada em Setembro de 2007 após ser capturada acidentalmente em redes de pesca. A Martinha foi capaz de ultrapassar todos os problemas de saúde, o que se tornou num sucesso para a nossa equipa de reabilitação. A reabilitação da Martinha está no seu sétimo mês e desde Abril 2008 que estamos a construir uma nova piscina para a última fase do programa de reabilitação, antes de ser libertada. Se tudo continuar como planeado, será o primeiro caso em Portugal de um golfinho resgatado, a regressar ao seu habitat natural. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/vet2.jpg" height="167" alt="Entubação da Martinha" width="251" style="float: left; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" /> Como pode imaginar a reabilitação de um animal marinho é um dos processos mais dispendiosos neste campo. Por exemplo: as piscinas são caras; os sistemas de filtragem são caros e frágeis; são precisas enormes quantidades de água; grandes quantidades de comida congelada, entre outros. Infelizmente, a <acronym title="Sociedade Portuguesa de Vida Selvagem">SPVS</acronym> (como todas as ONG's) não têm direito a fundos do governo e contam somente com voluntário e doações e o centro de reabilitação precisa de pagar contas astronómicas de medicamentos, comida, água e equipamento, todos os anos. <img src="http://www.socpvs.org/images/cramq/renato.jpg" height="167" alt="Renato" width="251" style="float: right; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" /> Durante os últimos 24 meses, tornou-se claro que os nossos esforços de reabilitação e a nossa capacidade de salvamento de animais emblemáticos e ameaçados têm tido resultados positivos, quer na área da conservação, quer na área da reabilitação. Actualmente, está a ser realizado um esforço imenso está a ser feito para melhorar o centro de reabilitação para que este se torne mais eficiente. Recentemente, melhorou-se a enfermaria e a sala de preparação de alimentos. Investimos também numa nova piscina, que será o maior tanque de reabilitação de cetáceos em Portugal.
